Post-warranty Problems – Compaq Presario v3000
Nearly 2 months after my 1 year warranty on my laptop got over I realised that the first component of my Laptop stopped working, that was my wifi, i managed to get around that problem by buying a usb wifi dongle. Now, one month later my display stopped working – no meassage ..nothing. All the lights on the laptop get turned on, but the display won’t show anything. Surprisingly both times, with my wifi as well as with my display, it used to work on-and-off before finally saying bye-bye.
I first noticed that my display was getting problems on Sunday, where the display wouldn’t show anything after a reboot. Switching off and booting didn’t help either. What did help however was waiting for 2 hours before trying to switch on my laptop..which worked (maybe those were the signs that are used to indicate that the laptop is getting older). The next day it was working with no problems at all. And yesterday it stopped working all together.
It makes me wonder whether the laptop companies have built in a chip which checks whether additional warranty has been purchased or not, and then systematically takes apart the system from the inside. The only way to test that would be to purchase 2 identical laptops – and extend the warranty on only one of them. I know it sounds insane, but I am depressed and life doesn’t seem fair. Y doesn’t this kind of stuff happen to my Office laptop instead (which is older and which I can get replaced)?
So, currently I am searching the sites for nice laptop configurations and seeing by how much it will set me back. Advice to all laptop users, get ur extended warranty!!

I don’t know how to put it.
I have a 3133AU and got the same wifi problem. Swen told me that you got a usb module, and I got one too. Now I am having the same problem with display. I have to shutdown-switchOn-shutdown-switchOn a couple of times to start it finally.
Do you wish to say I need to get backups

Welcome to the world of Compaq problems….I getting a bad feeling in my stomach since I recommend this laptop n its hp counterpart to my friends…
I suggest that you take a backup of ur data.. just in case.
These days my display problem has reduced..its still there though.. and surprise..surprise my inbuilt wifi got detected today.. for about 5 mins.. long enough for the OS to ask for its drivers.
i also have the same problem on this. but luckly my laptop still under warranty. so immediately i send it to hp service center for repairing.
when i ask hp what is the problem on my laptop, they told me is motherboard and they have replaced it…motherboard??? not even one year the motherboard oready die!!!! how come can be like this?????????????????????????
after one month i buy this laptop, wifi problem….after 11 month, motherboard problem…nothing to say………………………………………………….

In my case I am out of warranty so I am hoping that it will still get fixed since HP is very much aware of this problem, check out this page on HPs US site:

Also check what version of the BIOS you are using after the motherboard change, it should now be version F.39 (this BIOS version prevents the problem from occuring).

I was using a lot wifi on my compaq presario v3000, on day it just disapired. It is not recognized anymore. So I am wondering what option do I have , do u know can it be repaired … Can that part be replaced ?

I hope that your laptop is still under warranty in that case it is better to return it to HP, they should be replacing the motherboard since the problem has something to do with overheating. If you don’t replace your motherboard chances are that you will have some display problems after some time as well.

I forgot to update (I think Swen might have done it already). I went with a printout of the advisory and they replaced my motherboard
Unfortunately, there was a kernel panic in XP and I had to format it. On the other hand it was really surprising, but my SUSE 10.3 didn’t have a panic. It still worked like charm
Yeah, Swen mentioned it, unfortunately I cannot try the same here since the v3000 series is not being sold here in Germany, gonna try that advisory thing once I come back in april.
How much time did they take for the whole process?
Around a week. Generally they do it in 2-3 days, but they didn’t have any motherboard in stock.

I have ben thru the same problem. The problem is due to a faulty cooling system design which leads to popping of the solder joints with use and leading to failing of the motherboard. I am not an expert on this, but this is wht i understood.
HP has released a partial warranty replacement for these laptop series.

Hi, just an update.. I finally got my laptop fixed since it was covered in the partial replacement warranty. Also took the opportunity to go for a post warranty extension for Rs.5500.
Hopefully I will now have some peace of mind.
Update from my side. My laptop got screwed again
Luckily it’s under the extended 90 days guarantee period and they are replacing the motherboard again.
Now that I am buying a new laptop for myself and gifting the present HP one to my bro, I am not really sure if I should extend the warranty.
5500/- is for one year or two?

I have Compaq presario V3000 with me for last 1 year, and I visited HP service center for 4 times for the same reason that display stoped working,
Today I got clerification from the HP support that they are alrdy stoped production of this model as they are not able to fix this problem , there is a problem with this machins Motherbord…
This is absolutly a cheating with the customer as they are already awair with the problem and they are not capable to handle this then they should replace the machines in the market and should provide a new one with no problems.

join the club..I just had my second visit a few weeks back.
Luckily they are so aware of the problem by now that they are immediately ready to replace the motherboard – for my first time they actually suggested reinstalling the OS.

Just an addition to what Robin said. Even if your product number isn’t on the list, take it with the printout.
Mine wasn’t there, but they repaired it.
I have compaq pressaio v3000 laptop .The problem is that my bluetooth is being disabled.it doesn’t turn on.

I faced the issue as well. Using Presario v3701VU – I recorded a video, all components of the notebook is working perfectly, but not the screen. It just don’t light up for some reason and the only way is to connect to a VGA monitor.
But for godness sake, who would bring along a monitor with your notbook?

I sent it into my service center in my country at the 28th July. They replaced the motherboard for me with a dv2700. BIOS at that time was F.2A
Problem still occurs after the change of the motherboard. I have since updated to the latest BIOS, which is F.2B. Reading the changelog/description of F.2B doesn’t shows that it really help to solve the LCD issue yet.
However, I will be monitoring this.
And I bought my laptop for less than 6months, I bought it during April.

i have requested them to either replace my model or make any permanent remeady, but they dont give me good response. i am so much suffered from this model & i doesn’t get satisfactory service.

I also having 3228au amd laptop getting the same kind of wifi and blank screen problem..i read on diff webs it was wrong bios algo which is producing heat problem..i updated d bios n got screen bck…but still no wifi…i think it is damaged something…we got extended warrent on certin compaq laptops don knw how to use it

@ Prakash: Check whether your drivers are missing for your bluetooth problem.. the problem the others n myself are facing affect the wifi n the display.

your product code is mentioned in it. U can go to the service center and ask for a motherboard replacement…i doubt that they will replace the entire system. So far I have replaced my motherboard 3X in 6 months.
@sunnydhabhai: Check whether your product code is mentioned in the link i mentioned before.. The warranty covers both wifi as well as display..so if either one stops working ask for a motherboard replacement.. in fact the first time i faced this problem it was my wifi that conked first.
this was useful. my display stopped working twice . after 1 hr rest again started working. have v3000. should try and get it fixed free of cost since its not 24 months yet.

Hi Sindhu: U didnt mention whether ur warranty already expired or not. Either way… if ur laptop is still in the warranty period (and less than 6 months old) then walk into the HP service center and purchase a care pack..which extends ur warranty to 3 years.
If ur warranty expired than you can just purchase a 1-yr extension on ur warranty…. hope it answers ur questions.
I have a CompaqPresario V3252AU. 10 months into warranty period, the wireless chip died. 1 month later the mainboard kicked the bucket. Went to HP centre and they changed the mainboard for me. Got it back within 5 days. A month or two later, had problems with wifi again. A friend of mine who has the same version of laptop started having problems with her wifi 1 month after warranty period. Yesterday her mainboard died. I’ll never buy HP Compaq products again.
my laptop got the same problem but after 1 year warranty now they tried to fix my motherboard and i hope everything will be all right….

I have been facing the same problem with my Presario 3225AU laptop. I have got replaced my motherboard last week and facing the same problem again.
This is disgusting. And this will 100% get repeated frequently I’m for sure. I agree that HP has extended this warranty for a 1 year. But what after a year? Chargeable?

Guys, I am going to the Consumer Protection Department with all the blogs and the hp published articles on their sites. We have spent considerable amount on this and we can’t tolerate such a frequent problem. Top of the problem such a frustration that it sometimes spoils my whole day.
I know, it will result into ‘NOTHING’ but if we raise our concern together we might get some way out and find a permanent solution.
Please revert back if you want to join me fight this battle. We should get some justice. Let’s see how much ‘Jaago Graahak Jaago’ plays the role.

hello….im totally stucked with my presario v3225 au laptop……my video is not working nd itll start working after 2 or 3 hr rest……i dont know what to do….and yesterday i got a mail notification from hp that my warranty has been extended to feb 09-09……
I was reading your post and thought perhaps you didn’t know about the extended warranty that is now being offered because of the same problem you have described. If you copy and past this link ( http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&docname=c01087277 ) into you browser it will take you to a web page that lists all the computers that can get a free repair and what symptoms they are. One of the symptoms in a presario not being able to detect wifi. Hope that helps.

Is it possible to get motherboard replacement under that post warranty you are saying? I have USB ports issue, DISC Controller issue which caused DVD drive stopped working. This is nothing but Motherboard issue not DVD Drive or USB device issue.

I don’t think that THIS the post warranty covers ur problem, but try checking with HP they may have another post warranty for ur particular problem
I had a no display problemand got the motherboard replaced twice and still the problem persists. now the service centre people say that there is a problem wit the processor and these selfish people gave me a quotation of 30,000Rs. They say that now i am not eligible to buy a carepack. these people should be sued. can anyone help me with this problem?
I too experience a weird problem… after using the lap top for the whole night, the next day I on it, my screen cracks…
went down HP service centre, they told me i hit something on the laptop.. which is which idiot on earth will hit a heavy object on the laptop… I read somewhere that I’m not the first case… as the laptop cannot resist heat.. thus causing hem to crack… haiz… anyone here experience the same issue?
compaq is a real bad deal for a laptop,mine too stoped working a month after the warranty expired . i had the laptop for 2 1/2 years and had it in working condition only for a year. they are out only to cheat people .
